Dermatology Q & A

What is dermatology?

Dermatology is the area of medicine that focuses on the skin, hair, and nails. At ABC Medical Center, the experienced providers can handle any skin, hair, or nail problem, including minor surgical procedures, in their well-equipped facilities.

How do I check my skin for problem growths?

With some skin growths, it can be hard to know whether it’s a minor issue that goes away on its own or a potentially serious problem. It’s important to check the skin all over your body about once a month at home.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends following the “ABCDE” method of skin self-checks:

Asymmetry

Asymmetrical skin growth is one where the two halves look different.

Border

Skin growths with odd borders aren’t round. They may look scalloped, jagged, or otherwise irregular, or they may have an unclear border.

Color

Suspicious skin growths may have multiple colors. For example, a mole could be skin-colored in some places and white, red, brown, or black in others.

Diameter

A large diameter means the overall size of the skin growth is bigger than a pencil eraser.

Evolution

Evolution means the skin growth has changed in shape, size, or color over time.

Skin growths aren’t always bad, but a mole that has any of the above characteristics warrants a closer look from a professional. ABC Medical Center covers not just the ABCs but the whole alphabet of skin concerns.

Your ABC Medical Center specialist can examine moles, warts, bumps, and all other types of skin growths. If necessary, they may take a small skin sample or excise the entire skin growth to perform a biopsy. A biopsy is a test that looks for abnormal cells that could indicate cancer.
